Save electricity
31 March 2010Saving electricity doesn’t always take days of planning; there are many things you can do right now to save electricity and start cutting costs.
If your home has climate control with an automatic thermostat, set it so that it is comfortably warm in winter and comfortably cool in summer.
You can also turn down the hot water thermostat on your geyser. Most of them are set to 60°C – if this is the case, turn it down to 50°C. If your house happens to have two geysers, then try turning one of them off altogether. Don’t do a dishwashing cycle until you have a full load in the machine – it uses the same amount of water and electricity whether it’s full or half empty. The same goes for the washing machine.
If you have a computer, turn it off when you’re not using it and make sure that the power-saving options are set appropriately. Turning a computer off will not do any damage to it.
Another way to save electricity is to go around the house and replace all of those old incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). Switching over to CFLs will save you a heap of electricity. You can also start taking a short shower rather than soaking in a hot bath; you’ll probably feel better and you’ll certainly be saving energy.
When you’ve done all of the above, there’s just one more step that you can take: turn your home into a smart home. Civic Home Automation can help you make this step.
